# Air Purifier vs Humidifier: Two Different Jobs

> An air purifier filters particles out of the air. A humidifier adds moisture to it. Neither replaces the other, so here is which one to buy.

**Verdict:** These are two different appliances, not two versions of the same one. An air purifier pulls room air through a filter and traps airborne particles in it; it does nothing about how dry the air is. A humidifier turns water from a tank into mist and raises the room's humidity; it does not filter anything. So there is no winner here, only a match to the problem you actually have. For airborne dust, the entry point on our US list is the LEVOIT Core 200S-P (≈ $75). For air that feels dry, it is the AquaOasis Cool Mist 2.2L (≈ $30). If you have both problems, you need both machines.

Want the quick answer? This is not a matchup with a winner. An **air purifier** and a **humidifier** are two machines doing two unrelated jobs: one filters particles out of the air, the other puts moisture into it. Neither can do the other's job, so the useful question is not which is better but which problem you have. Airborne dust points to a purifier, and the cheapest way in on our US list is the **LEVOIT Core 200S-P** (≈ $75). Dry air points to a humidifier, and there the entry point is the **AquaOasis Cool Mist 2.2L** (≈ $30). Prices are approximate and change, so double-check before you buy.

## How we choose

We work on a research-and-synthesis model, with no hands-on testing. We compare the manufacturer specs, read the consensus of buyer reviews on Amazon.com, and check current prices at publication. For this comparison there was nothing to score against anything else, because the two appliances are not competing: what mattered was describing what each machine physically does, naming the price each category starts at on our own lists, and being clear about which questions our data cannot answer. Our full method is on the [how we choose](/en-us/how-we-choose/) page.

## What each machine actually does

An **air purifier** is a fan and a filter. It draws room air in, forces it through the filter media, and pushes the air back out. A true HEPA filter, which is what the LEVOIT Core 200S-P uses, is very effective at catching fine airborne dust while the unit is running. What it will not do is stop dust settling on shelves and floors, which is still a cleaning job, and it does not change the moisture content of the air by design.

A **humidifier** is a tank and a mist mechanism. It takes water you pour in and releases it into the room as mist, so the relative humidity in that room rises. The AquaOasis is a cool mist model, which means no heating element and no steam. What it will not do is trap anything: the air going past it comes out with exactly as many particles in it as it went in with.

That is the whole comparison. One machine changes what is floating in the air, the other changes how much water is in it.

## So pick the problem, not the machine

Because neither appliance substitutes for the other, the decision is made before you look at any model. If your complaint is dust in the air, a humidifier will not touch it, and adding one is money spent on the wrong problem. If your complaint is that the room feels dry, a purifier will not help, no matter how good its filter is. Buying both is a reasonable answer only when you genuinely have both complaints, and it means two purchases, two spots on the floor, and two maintenance routines rather than one.

If you have landed on a purifier, our [best air purifier in the USA](/en-us/best/best-air-purifier/) list runs from the Core 200S-P up to large-room models, and [how to choose an air purifier](/en-us/guides/how-to-choose-an-air-purifier/) walks through matching rated coverage to your actual room. If you have landed on a humidifier, the same job is done by [best humidifier in the USA](/en-us/best/best-humidifier/) and [how to choose a humidifier](/en-us/guides/how-to-choose-a-humidifier/). If you are specifically wondering whether a purifier does anything about household dust, we answered that on its own in [do air purifiers help with dust](/en-us/blog/do-air-purifiers-help-with-dust/).

## Where our data runs out

Three honest gaps, worth saying out loud before you treat the table above as complete.

First, the two categories are not sized in the same units on our own lists. Air purifiers are rated by coverage in square feet, humidifiers by tank size in liters. There is no conversion between the two, so you cannot read across the table and conclude that one covers "more room" than the other.

Second, neither of our best lists publishes a noise rating in decibels, a CADR figure, or a filter replacement cost for these two specific models, so we cannot compare them on running cost or on how loud they are, only on what buyers say. If CADR is the number you want to shop on, we explain it separately in [what CADR do you need](/en-us/blog/what-cadr-do-you-need/).

Third, running cost is a genuinely separate question from purchase price, and the $30 versus $75 gap here says nothing about it. We treat it on its own in [air purifier electricity cost](/en-us/blog/air-purifier-electricity-cost/) and [how much electricity does a humidifier use](/en-us/blog/how-much-electricity-does-a-humidifier-use/).

## Bottom line

There is no better machine here, only a right one for your problem. Filter the air and you want an air purifier, starting at the **LEVOIT Core 200S-P** (≈ $75). Add moisture to it and you want a humidifier, starting at the **AquaOasis Cool Mist 2.2L** (≈ $30). Have both problems and you want both machines, bought separately, for separate reasons. Both shortlists are linked above; to compare price ranges rather than individual picks, browse [air purifier prices](/en-us/prices/air-purifier-prices/) and [humidifier prices](/en-us/prices/humidifier-prices/). All prices here are approximate at publication and change, so double-check before you buy.
