A burning or electrical smell means stop using the fan and unplug it. Do not run it longer to see whether the smell clears. A smell alone cannot establish that a new fan is safe or diagnose which part has failed.

First decide whether to stop

Electrical Safety First advises switching a fan off for a burning smell or unusual noise. Treat damaged wiring, smoke, stalling and abnormal heat as reasons to leave it unplugged and contact the manufacturer or a qualified repairer. Do not open the motor housing or spray cleaner through its vents.

For a new fan, check the exact model’s first-use instructions and contact its support team if an unexpected odor persists. Advice about a particular manufacturer’s new-plastic smell does not establish that every similar smell is harmless. Stop immediately if the odor seems burnt or comes with heat or noise.

If the fan has been stored

With the fan unplugged, look for dust on the grille and accessible surfaces. Clean those before using it again. A dusty surface is a reason to clean, not proof that dust caused an electrical smell.

Use a soft brush or cloth and follow the manual for any removable grille or blades. Keep water away from the motor, controls, cord and plug. Let cleaned parts dry fully before reassembly; a fixed waiting time cannot tell you that hidden moisture has gone.

A tower fan may not have a user-removable grille. Do not force it open because instructions for a pedestal fan show removable blades. Honeywell’s fan-care support illustrates why access and cleaning steps need to follow the model’s manual.

What to tell the repairer

Record the model number, when the smell started, the speed selected, and whether the fan slowed, hummed or became unusually hot. Describe what happened without repeatedly switching it on to reproduce a fault.

The contact-cleaner product listed on this page is not a household remedy for a burning fan. Only a qualified technician who has identified an appropriate repair should decide whether it belongs in that repair. Buying a newer fan is also not a diagnosis of what went wrong.

Cleaning or replacement?

If routine external cleaning solves a simple dust problem and the fan operates normally, replacement may be unnecessary. If there was burning, damaged wiring or repeated stalling, leave it unplugged until assessed. Compare a repair quotation with a replacement only after the fault and warranty position are clear.

Frequently asked questions

Should I run a smelly fan to clear the odor?

Do not run a fan to clear a burning or electrical odor. Unplug it and arrange an assessment. Clean a stored fan while unplugged before returning it to use.

Is new-plastic smell always harmless?

No. Smell alone cannot establish safety. Check the exact model’s first-use guidance and contact its manufacturer; stop immediately for burning, unusual heat, smoke or noise.

Can I spray contact cleaner into the fan?

No. Do not spray through vents or open the motor housing. A technician must first identify the fault and appropriate repair.
