How to Clean a Dishwasher: Filter, Seal and Odor Checks

Start with the dishwasher’s model instructions: clean its user-removable filter, wipe the permitted seal surfaces and use the specified maintenance cycle and cleaner. A hot vinegar wash is not a universal procedure. Keep routine cleaning separate from work on the pump, wiring or hidden drain connections. Do not mix vinegar with bleach or chlorine cleaners: the mixture can release toxic gas.

Why does my dishwasher smell, and what should I check first?

Check the accessible filter and visible food residue first, using the removal and cleaning method in your manual. A dirty filter can contribute to odor, but smell alone does not prove that the appliance is fault-free or identify a blocked drain. Let the machine cool and follow its isolation instructions before handling removable parts. Watch for sharp debris; do not reach blindly into the filter opening. Wipe permitted door-seal surfaces, refit the filter correctly and use only a compatible maintenance product and cycle. Choose the cleaner and cycle together

A machine cleaner and ordinary dish detergent serve different tasks. Check both the appliance manual and the cleaner pack for compatibility, placement, dose and whether the machine must be empty. Do not combine recipes or add extra chemicals because one cycle has not solved the problem.
